Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is the UV light Safe?

A.

Any exposure to Ultra Violet light should be minimised as it can cause damage to the skin or eyes. We have taken the safety features of the Germ Genie very seriously indeed such that you would have to mis-use the product in order to receive an unsafe lavel of UV light.

One full dose of the Germ Genie lamp is within the safe limits recommended by the International commision on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (http://www.icnirp.de/PubOptical.htm) for an 8 hour period. Safety features within the product mean that under normal usage, only a tiny fraction of this dosage will be received by anyone in the vicinity of the product.

  • The UV light turns off immediately when you put your hands underneath it
  • If more than 120 minutes of UV light is used in an 8 hour period, the Germ Genie will wait until it is safe to start sanitising again. This is so that no-one in the vicinity will be exposed to anything other than safe levels of UV light

Q. How effective is the product at killing MRSA

A.

Our work with the University of Hertfordshire has shown that the Germ Genie is effective in killing between 90% and 100% of e-coli and Staphyloccus Aureus (MRSA) in just 1 minute. Further Lab work is going on at the moment to determine the kill levels after 2 minutes and 10 minutes exposure. Under typical usage, we would expect the keyboard to be sanitised between 20 and 120 times per day, which will comfortably kill any MRSA or e-coli that finds it's way onto the target area.

Q. What Safety Features are included in the product?

A.

Safety Features of the product include:

  • The Germ Genie is designed to sense if there is any movement within the field of sterilization.
  • If any movement is detected, then it will automatically shut-off until it is safe to run a germicidal cycle.
  • The Lamp is also designed to be focussed only on the sterilisation area with all other areas shadowed from the UV light.
  • One Sterilisation dose is within the safe limits proposed by the ICNIRP http://www.icnirp.de/PubOptical.htm.
  • The product contains a clear warning for any users in the vicinity to see.
